Achieving the best aesthetic results should be addressed in the initial planning of any breast cancer surgery — and not as an afterthought.
~Dr. Linda Liu
During challenging lumpectomies with large tumors, Dr. Liu collaborates with plastic surgeons to use oncoplastic techniques to reshape the breast. This innovative approach allows larger tumors to be removed without mastectomy, increases the likelihood of clearing margins, and often enhances a patient’s cosmetic appearance. She also performs nipple-sparing mastectomies. When feasible, Dr. Liu advocates for direct-to-implant reconstruction without an expander for a faster recovery with less discomfort. Her expertise also includes the placement of brachytherapy catheters to minimize radiation exposure, ultrasound-guided biopsies, and genetic counseling.
Dr. Liu is uncompromising about thoroughly educating her patients about their surgical options. She and her oncology, radiology, and plastic surgery colleagues co-founded the Peace of Mind conference, inviting breast cancer patients to attend a multidisciplinary tumor board that reviewed their cases for free. Hearing a cohesive plan from a panel of experts empowered these patients to more confidently make choices about their treatment plans. Dr. Liu is eager to continue this collaborative approach at the innovative Vincere Cancer Center, which distinguishes itself as having a dedicated breast center that offers mammography, breast surgery, and plastic reconstruction services on site, as well as radiation oncology and pathology.
